Before you sell your MacBook, you need to do three things: sign out of iCloud, erase the drive, and make sure the next owner can't access your data. It takes about 15 minutes. Here's exactly how to do it.
Step 1: Back Up Your Data First
Before touching anything else, back up. Time Machine to an external drive, or iCloud backup for anything critical. Once you erase the Mac, data recovery is not possible through normal means.
If you're selling because the Mac is dead or won't turn on, skip to Step 3 β most buyback services including SellMacBook.com accept non-functional devices as-is.
Step 2: Sign Out of iCloud (Find My Mac)
This is the most important step. If Find My Mac is still active when the buyer receives the Mac, they'll be locked out. You'll get the device returned to you β or a $0 revision if it's a buyback.
On macOS Ventura and later: Apple menu β System Settings β [Your Name] β Sign Out.
On macOS Monterey and earlier: Apple menu β System Preferences β Apple ID β Overview β Sign Out.
You'll be prompted to keep a copy of iCloud data on the Mac. Choose Remove β you don't need it since you're erasing the machine.
Step 3: Sign Out of Other Apple Services
While you're at it:
- iTunes / Music app: Account β Authorizations β Deauthorize This Computer
- iMessage: Messages β Settings β iMessage β Sign Out
- FaceTime: FaceTime β Settings β Sign Out
These don't block the next owner from using the Mac, but they prevent your accounts from being accessible on someone else's device.
Step 4: Erase the Mac
Apple Silicon Macs (M1, M2, M3, M4)
Shut down the Mac. Hold the power button until you see "Loading startup options." Click Options β Continue β select Erase Mac from the Utilities menu β Erase Mac β confirm.
The Mac will restart into Activation Lock setup mode, which is exactly where a new owner (or buyback service) needs it.
Intel Macs (2017β2020)
Restart and hold Command + R to boot into macOS Recovery. Open Disk Utility β select Macintosh HD β Erase β choose APFS format β Erase Volume Group β confirm. Then quit Disk Utility and select Reinstall macOS if you want to leave the buyer with a fresh install, or leave it at the recovery screen.
Step 5: Confirm Activation Lock Is Off
On your iPhone or another device, go to icloud.com/find and verify the Mac no longer appears under your devices. If it still shows, it means the iCloud sign-out didn't fully complete β retry Step 2.
An active Activation Lock at the time of inspection is the single most common reason buyback services issue a $0 revised offer. Skipping this step costs real money.
What If the Mac Won't Turn On?
If your MacBook won't power on, you can still remove it from iCloud remotely. Go to icloud.com/find β select the Mac β Remove This Device. This disables Activation Lock without needing physical access to the machine.
You can still sell a MacBook that won't turn on β most buyback services accept non-functional devices, though the value is lower.
Before You Ship
Once the Mac is erased and out of iCloud:
- Remove any third-party accessories (dongles, cases, adapters)
- Include the original charger if you have it β it typically adds $10β25 to your offer
- Pack with padding β inspect damage is assessed at arrival, and shipping damage that wasn't disclosed can reduce your offer
